4 )辨异: hurt, injure, wound, v.

这三个词均含有“受伤、损害”的意思。hurt 常用于人, 指伴有“疼痛”的肉体伤害或感情伤害。

She fell and hur t her arm. 她摔了一跤, 摔坏了胳膊。

They hurt me deeply. 他们深深地伤害了我。

injure 是一般用语, 常指事故损伤或骨折等。

Forty passengers were injured in the fire.

这次火灾中四十多名乘客受伤。

The injured people were taken to hospital. 受伤的人被送往医院。

wound 一般指战争或斗殴中造成的伤害, 常有明显的刀(枪)伤口。

In the battle ten soldiers were killed and about fifty wounded.

在这场战斗中, 10 名战士牺牲, 大约50 名受伤。

11. Perhaps this is why someone who robs a few dollars by force from a corner store will often end up with a longer jail term than a fraud artist who swindles thousands of dollars.

为什么一个人在街角商店里用暴力抢劫了几块钱, 结果在监狱里蹲的时间比一个诈骗了成千上万美元的冒牌艺术家长得多呢?道理也许就在于此。

1 )by force 靠武力, 强行The thief took the money from the old man by force. 这小偷强行拿走了老人的钱。

They occupied by force the territory of Czechoslovakia.

2 )end up with 以..结束;结果是..;以..告终We started with soup, and had fruit to end up with.

我们开始喝汤, 最后吃水果。

Her lecture ended up with two or three questions for the students to discuss. 她讲课的最后部分是提出两三个问题供学生讨论。

3 )term 在这里是个名词, 意思是“ 期;期限”。

He had served a term in prison for his revolutionary activities.

为了革命活动, 他曾经服过劳役。

They were sentenced to long terms in prison.

他们被判处长期监禁。

12. The police would never be able to keep an eye on everyone, and people would still find ways to bend new laws. 警察不能永远盯住每一个人, 人们会想办法钻新法律的空子。

1 )be able to 能够, 它与can 意思相近, 但be able to 可有更多的时态形式, 还可以同情态动词或某些系动词连用, 也可用于不定式或动名词短语中, 而can 则不能。

He seemed a ble to put complicated thought into simple words.

他似乎能用简单的语言表达复杂的思想。

He said he so much regretted not being a ble to swim.

他说非常遗憾不会游泳。

2 )keep an eye on 照看, 留心瞧着, 注意Keep a n eye on time, or we will be late. 注意时间, 否则我们会迟到的。

Please keep a n eye on my suitcase while I go to buy my ticket.

我买票时请留意一下我的箱子。

3 )动词bend 的基本意思是“ 低下, 使弯曲, 使弯下”, 但在这里是它的引申意思“使动摇”,“ 改变主意”。

He is very firm about it;I can not bend him.

他对此很坚决, 我没法使他动摇。

He bent them to his will. 他使他们遵从他的意愿。

1.In fact, what seems strange to me is that courting or dating is not always for the purpose of finding a husband or wife. 其实, 似乎使我感到奇怪的是求爱和约会不一定是以寻找丈夫或妻子为目的。

1 )what seems strange to me 是由what 引导的名词性从句, 在该句中充当主语。

Wha t they a re a fter is profit. 他们追求的是利润。

When they will come hasn’t been made public.

他们什么时候来还没有宣布。

2 )seem 在这里当作连系动词用, 意思是“ 似乎, 好像”。

He seemed always to have a high opinion of grandpa.

他似乎总是对他祖父的印象很好。

His apology seemed to me to be half-hearted.

在我看来, 他的道歉好像是半心半意的。

3 )courting 是动词court 的动名词形式, court 作动词用时意思是“求爱, 讨好, 寻求”等。

John has been cour ting Mary for three years.

约翰追求玛丽已经有三年了。

4 )dating 是动词date 的动名词形式。date 在这里的意思是“ 约会”。

Tom dated Alice yesterday. 汤姆与艾莉丝昨天约会了。

They ha ve been da ting (each other)for months.

他们约会有几个月了。

5 )for.purpose 为了..目的For what purpose did your committee invite me to come here?你们委员会邀请我来这里有何目的?

If I go there in future, it will be for the purpose of seeing you.

如果将来我去那里, 其目的是为了看看你。

2.If they both say“ yes”, and nobody attending the wedding stands up to object, they are declared“man and wife”. 假如他们都回答“ 愿意”而在场的没人站起来反对的话, 那就宣布他们为“ 夫妇”。

1 )attending the wedding 是现在分词短语作定语, 修饰nobody。

2 )object 在这里作不及物动词用, 后常跟介词to, 意思是“ 反对”。

Do you object to such suggestions?你反对这样的建议吗?

They objected to leaving school and going to work.

他们反对离校去工作。

3.Perhaps it is because the family members are not as involved in the wedding preparation as they are in Iran. 也许是因为双方家庭都不像伊朗的习惯那样都参与到婚礼的筹备工作的缘故吧!

1 )not so(as).as 不及..

She is not a s (so)talkative a s before. 她不像过去那样爱说话了。

These engines are not as (so)powerful a s those we have just

made. 这些发动机没有我们刚制造的那些功率大。

2 )be involved in 牵连进去, 陷入, 参与It was not until the 18th century that men realized that the whole of the brain was involved in the working of the mind. 直到18 世纪人类才意识到整个脑子都卷入了思想活动。

He has been involved in debts. 他债台高筑。

4.It is definitely not a part of the fun-filled years of growing up like it is here in America. 决不像在美国求爱只是充满玩乐的成长过程中不可或缺的经历。

1 )fun-filled 是合成形容词, 它是由名词+ 过去分词构成, 比如state-owned 国营的;Chinese-designed 中国设计的;radioquipped 装了无线电的;machine-cultivated 机耕的等等。

2 )grow up 成长, 长大Tom wants to be a coach when he grows up.

汤姆长大后想当一名教练员。

Your children are growing up very quickly.

你的孩子们正在很快成长。

3 )like 在这里是作连词用, 意思是“ 好像, 就像”。作为连词用, like 主要用在口语中。许多人认为不规范, 而用as, as if, in the same way as 来代替它。

They didn’t do it like (as)we do it now.

他们不是用我们现在做的方法去做的。

Do you make bread like (as)you make cakes?

你做面包就像你做蛋糕一样吗?

5.For several months, she continues to stay at her own home preparing her dowry and receiving instructions from her mother on how to be a good wife and mother. 她要先在娘家呆几个月准备嫁妆, 听母亲教她如何做一个好妻子和好母亲。
