第66章 核!合!和!(52)

.Half a year later, the couple finally stepped into the church. In a holiday after the wedding,Bacon took Nobuko to pay a visit to his parents. In a farm in Ohio, the Bacons welcomed Nobuko warmly.Bacon's parents loved their daughter-in-law very much, giving her a lot of presents as soon as they met.

.But just at that night,a terrible thing happened. In a drawer to the desk in Bacon's room,Nobuko saw a piece of medal and a certificate for Bacon's participating in the bombing at Hiroshima.

.These things suggested what Bacon had done to Hiroshima.Nobuko was plunged into deep sorrow. She thought of her family killed in the explosion, her house burnt into ruins and ashes, her neighbors, her 360,000 fellowmen and numerous orphans like her.Tears flowed down her cheeks.

.Finding Nobuko in so great agony,Bacon babbled like an idiot,"Is that because of the bomb at Hiroshima? But it was an order,I'm a soldier and I could not but carry out my orders. And I was not clear of the force of that ‘big boy',and I had thought it was just a bomb just as usual. Not until we dropped that ‘big boy',not until I saw mushroom clouds thrusting into the sky,did I realize that I would regret all my life.

."After that day,I cannot count how many nights I woke up in nightmares. After I woke up,the first thing I did was to see if there were still floating ghosts around me,if there were still the numerous hands of the ghosts which had tried to seize me in the dream. From then on,the only thing I can do is to indulge me in guitar,in music… But conversely, all these tragedies were because you Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor at first.Lucky I was on holiday on shore that day. It's too terrible. All the ships at the harbor were bombed out and sunk; the entire bay became red in the blood of the seamen on the ships. And also, the pacific war was also launched by you Japanese. Why blame me for all these?"

.Bacon defended ceaselessly for himself this way to Nobuko. But he had found the return in Nobuko's eyes to his explanation were only complaints and pities, and increasing distance and coldness.Every time when he thought of this,Bacon would have a shiver unconsciously,a shiver all over his body.

.At the bottom of his heart,Bacon was aware that all the happiness he and Nobuko had enjoyed was facing a doomed end, just like the death in the thunder of that bomb at Hiroshima. All had been ended in her silence and disregard.

.Days lingered in such horrifying silence.

.Bacon's wedding holiday came to its end,so it was with Nobuko's love with him—They were just like two strangers although they still lied in the same bed.Bacon could not endure such torture anymore.

.One early morning,Bacon kissed her wife's forehead, and said gently,"Let's go back to Hawaii. Our business is our business, and don't make my innocent parents worry about us.I'll respect any requests of yours when we are back at home in Hawaii."

."Early the next morning," Mieko continued,"they said good-bye to my aged grandparents and returned to Hawaii. But who ever expected this travel would be their last one? Before long after their return to Hawaii,my father tried to persuade my mother but in vain,my mother returned to Hiroshima by herself. She took part in the salvation and reconstruction over there, and then I was born."

.More unexpectedly, the young mother also caught leukemia when she worked voluntarily in Hiroshima. Before long, she died in loneliness and misery, leaving her daughter alone. All things happened so suddenly, even Bacon had no information on her at all.

."And then?" Kyuutarou Hibachi asked earnestly.

."Don't push me.Just listen patiently." Mieko continued,"Afterwards,I was sent to the orphanage, and then to the primary school, and then a middle school. After the graduation from the middle school,I received two enrolment notices from universities.

."But I went to a vocational school to learn hairdressing.Having graduated from the vocational school,I,with the help of the school and my relatives, opened this shop, and as for the things afterwards, well, you know all of them,I won't take troubles to repeat them.Well, what a pity I did not learn my skills well, even not so good as you who have never learned it vocationally. You're so smart,Kyuutarou Hibachi.Do you know? They say interracial children would be very smart. You should be just that type, but I'm not…"

."Don't digress." Kyuutarou Hibachi urged,"What afterwards?Did your father Bacon and your grandpa not come to look for you?"

.Mieko continued,"They came here for many times, but every time they were disappointed because of a letter left by my mother, and they went back nothing in hands."

."And later, when I was 15,my father finally found me through an international criminal police organization after numberless failures, and he tried to get me to him by means of judicial procedures, but once again,my mother's will stopped him,and he failed in the first trial.

."My father did not give in on me easily. He was determined to appeal, spending a large amount of money to employ a world famous lawyer Irving from Switzerland, who appeared in court in many important cases.

."When the case was opened again, the court summoned me to ask my personal decision.I came to the court. But unknowing why,I claimed in the court I'd continue this independent life in Japan.

."At these words,Mr.Irving came up to me,and remarked gently,‘Your father and I lost the case because of your words just now,but I think you've done a right thing.' At this moment,I noticed my father in tears in the court.I knew he loved me,and he loved my mother even more deeply. His tears were half for me and half for my mother.

."Final decision of the court was a complete denial of my father's appeal, and once again the law tilted against his wishes. This failure meant that he would lose his right of fatherhood forever.
