还记得“欲速则不达”怎么说吗？对，就是“more haste，less speed”。那“公开的秘密”怎么表达？应该是“an open secret”。这就是英语中的“矛盾修辞法”，就是把一对语意相反、对立的词巧妙地放在一起使用，借以表达较为复杂的思想感情或者说明某种意味深长的哲理。从表面上看，这种手法似乎不合乎情理，相互矛盾，但仔细琢磨，则能领悟其深刻的内在含意。矛盾修饰法的妙用常常揭示了矛盾和对立，而自已却感到难以言状。在上面这首诗中，矛盾修饰法正是作者深入地洞悉人生，体察人情，表达和揭示人生的情感之微妙复杂的语言艺术。再比如，The mother is undergoing the joyful pain，and the painful joy of childbirth. （这位母亲正经历着分娩的欢乐的痛苦，痛苦的欢乐。）
