Our life is like an echo：we get back what we give.
Ishot an arrow into the air，
It fell to earth，1 knew not where；
For，so swiftly it flew，the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air，
It fell to earth I knew not where；
For who has sight so keen and strong，
That it can follow the flight of songs？
Long，long afterward，in an oak
I found the arrow，still unbroke；
And the song，from beginning to end，
I found again in the heart of a friend.

我们的生活犹如回音：我们得到的回报正是我们所付出的。
我朝空中射支箭，
不知坠落在何方；
一闪而逝似流星，
视线难追箭飞翔。
我向空中唱首歌，
不知飘落在何方；
何人有此犀利眼，
竟能跟随歌飞扬？
多年以后橡树里，
依然完好那支箭；
从头至尾那首歌，
时时抚慰友人心。
注：朗费罗（1807-1882），美国历史上最伟大的诗人之一。他主张“为人生而艺术”，而不是“为艺术而艺术”。他的诗大多朴实无华，表现了劳动者的生活及思想，并表达了对他们的理解、同情及爱。《箭与歌》简洁凝练，以射箭、唱歌两件小事为喻，告诉人们：凡事都有结果，任何行为，无论善恶，都会在世上留下痕迹，尽管人们当时没有觉察到。
