While the Internet continues to grow at speed, the issueissue n. 问题, 出版, 发行, 论点,结果 of privacy still has to be resolved, says the man dubbed as the Father of the Internet.

Father of Internet Surprised by 600 Million Followers

Internet pioneer Dr Vinton Cerf carries the affectionateaffectionate adj.亲爱的, 挚爱的 label of being Father of the Internet.Almost everybody he encountersencounter v. 遭遇, 遭遇战 has a question for him—and the selfconfessed geekturnedcelebrity loves to answer them.

Twenty years ago Cerf and Robert Kahn developed the architecturearchitecture n.建筑, 建筑学,体系机构 for the internet, known as the TCP/IP protocolsprotocol n. Their innovation sparked the dramatic growth of the internet from 50,000 users in 1983 to more than 360 million today.

Result:wherever Dr Cerf presents seminars around the world he is quickly set on by eager fans.He admits that he finds some of the attention.though not the questioning,a bit strange.“The part thats most weird is that teenagers come up and want to have their Tshirts autographedautograph n.

Referring to his early days with the internet, he said:“We were just geeks.” Dr Cerf spent time with the US Department of Defence in the late 1970s and early 1980s and is now looking to the future and the development of an interplanetary internet.

Asked if he ever expected the internet to become so popular.Dr Cerf said the staggeringstaggering adj. 令人惊愕的,蹒跚摇晃的 number of users was a surprise.

He identifiedidentify n.可辨认性,可识别性,可鉴别性 one of the key issues facing the net today as privacy and said surveillancesurveillance n.监视, 监督 of emails and the internet was almost inevitableinevitable adj.

“It happened with the telephone system and it will certainly happen with email. There are tools to combatcombat n. 战斗, 搏斗, 抗击 that—one is encryptionencryption 编密码—but the problem is that right now its not easy enough to use.Perhaps the pressurepressure n.压, 压力, 电压, 压迫, 强制 and desire for privacy will be sufficientsufficient adj.充分的, 足够的 to cause us to develop better tools to secure the communication.”

Dr Cerf said the level of objectionableobjectionable adj. 可用到的, 可利用的, 有用的, 有空的, 接受探访的 on the internet was a worry but it was difficult to stop.

“Theres no way to stop it technically—but the internet is a mirror of mankind. If we dont like what we see in the mirror then touching up the mirror is not the answer.”

He predictedpredict v.预知, 预言, 预报 electoral voting on the net would eventuallyeventually adv.最后, 终于 become popular, but said tensionstension n. 拉紧, 使紧张 existed between being able to authenticateauthenticate v.鉴别 a vote and still maintain voter anonymityanonymity n.

“I need to authorise you as a voter but I also need to know you only voted once.Somewhere I need to keep your vote secret.Im optimisticoptimistic adj.乐观的 about being able to do it in the future.”
