Wake Forest University is a private， coeducational university in Winston-Salem， North Carolina， founded in 1834 as the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute， named because students and staff were required to spend half of each day doing manual labor on the plantation. In 1967 the school became the fully accredited Wake Forest University. In 1838， it was renamed Wake Forest College， and the manual labor system was abandoned. The university received its name from its original location in Wake Forest， north of Raleigh， North Carolina， the state capital. The University prides itself on its strong arts and sciences and basic medical sciences programs， all of which emphasize close student-professor interaction. And it also prides itself on offering its undergraduate students small classes that encourage critical thinking to help students develop informed opinions and communicate them both in writing and verbally.

System： Wake Forest is divided into six schools that off bachelor"s， master"s， law， medical and biomedical sciences and divinity programs. Its graduate programs include the highly ranked School of Law， Babcock Graduate School of Management， and School of Medicine. There are close to 40 undergraduate and graduate programs to choose from and the school offers a small student-to-teacher ratio. The university has a School of Divinity， where students will study subjects such as pastoral care， systematic theology， church history and the Bible. The school offers Division I NCAA athletic programs as well as intramural sports. Financial aid is also available.
Study programs： A master"s program can generally be completed in two years and a Ph.D. program in approximately five years. Foreign language and special skill requirements vary with each program. Graduate programs are tailored to the individual. The Graduate School"s educational philosophy encourages students to pursue an area of specialization in depth and to broaden their training while filling in any gaps in their earlier education. A Ph.D. scholar should be able to carry out teaching and research independently and competently. Various special programs of an interdisciplinary or tutorial nature enhance students" opportunities to develop their full potential.
