The University of Texas at Austin (University of Texas， UT Austin， UT， or simply Texas) is a public research-intensive university located in Austin， Texas， United States. In 1881， Austin was chosen as the site of the main university， and Galveston was designated the location of the medical department. On the original "College Hill"， an official ceremony began construction on what is now referred to as the old Main Building in late 1882. The school was founded in 1883 and features the largest enrollment of all colleges and universities in Texas as well as one of the largest student bodies in the U.S. The University of Texas at Austin was named one of the original eight Public Ivy institutions and was inducted into the American Association of Universities in 1929.Consistently ranked among the top universities in the nation， the University of Texas consists of a wide variety of colleges and schools that range in subject matter from Engineering to Liberal Arts， thus giving students numerous options to pursue academically.

System： The University of Texas at Austin is divided into 17 schools and colleges， the largest of which is the College of Liberal Arts， including the highly ranked McCombs School of Business， College of Education， Cockrell School of Engineering， College of Fine Arts， School of Nursing， College of Pharmacy， School of Social Work， School of Information， Jackson School of Geosciences and LBJ School of Public Affairs， in addition to the well-regarded School of Architecture and School of Law. UT offers more than 650 study abroad programs， with the most popular destinations being Spain， Italy， the United Kingdom， France， and China.
Athletics： The University of Texas boasts a very rich athletic history and， in keeping with the Texas tradition of raising cattle， the school"s mascot is the"Longhorn". UT"s football program consistently draws national attention and produces a number of professional football stars， while the basketball and baseball teams have also performed well on an annual basis for quite some time.
