The University of Maryland， College Park (often referred to as The University of Maryland， UM， UMD， UMCP， or Maryland) is a public research university located in the city of College Park in Prince George"s County， Maryland， just outside Washington， D.C. Founded in 1856， the University of Maryland is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland. It is considered a Public Ivy institution. Located between Washington， D.C.， and Baltimore， the University of Maryland offers students a suburban lifestyle within easy reach of big-city experiences. The University of Maryland"s location near Washington， D.C. has created strong research partnerships， especially with government agencies. The flagship campus in College Park， which has its own subway stop on the D.C.-area Metro transit system， is often considered a commuter school. Campus building： Morrill Hall is the oldest continuously-used academic building on the campus of the University of Maryland， College Park. Built in 1898 in the Second Empire architectural style， it was the sole academic building left untouched by The Great Fire of 1912 which devastated almost all of campus. Morrill Hall is currently being considered for addition to the Prince George"s County historic landmark list. Morrill Hall was noted for the view of the Washington Monument which could be seen from its cupola.
