The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College， more commonly known as the University of Vermont or UVM， is a public research university and， after 1862， the U.S. state of Vermont"s land-grant university. The University is commonly known as "UVM"， an abbreviation of its Latin name， Universitas Viridis Montis (University of the Green Mount). The University of Vermont was founded as a private university in 1791， the same year Vermont became the 14th state in the union. In 1865， the university merged with Vermont Agricultural College chartered November 22， 1864， emerging as the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. Because of the natural beauty of its surrounding area and its many sporting and entertainment opportunities， Burlington has been named one of the nation"s "Big Ten" college towns by Edward B. Fiske in his book The Best Buys in College Education.

System： The University of Vermont comprises several colleges and schools including： College of Agriculture and Life Sciences， College of Arts and Sciences， School of Business Administration， College of Education and Social Services， College of Engineering and Mathematics， College of Medicine， College of Nursing and Health Sciences， Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources. Note： About half of the students at UVM enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences to pursue a wide range of popular major studies. City show： The city is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain， north of Shelburne Bay. Burlington has a humid continental climate， with cold winters and warm， humid summers. Burlington"s economy is based mostly on education and health services； trade， transportation and utilities. Burlington has the largest public library in Vermont， the Carnegie Building of the Fletcher Free Library. Unlike most libraries in Vermont， it is publicly owned. The building was originally endowed by Andrew Carnegie.
