The university campus （13，500 students） is centrally located in the city of Dundee. Students live in a single occupant room in University of Dundee residence halls either on campus or within easy walking distance to the campus. The residence halls are not catered. HeriotWatt is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK. Biographical History
The institution that became HeriotWatt University began with a conversation between the Edinburgh businessmen Leonard Horner and Robert Bryson about the lack of technical education for the working classes. This led to the opening of the “School of Arts of Edinburgh for the Education of Mechanics in Such Branches of Physical Science as are of Practical Application in their several trades” in October 1821.
In 1852 the name of the school was changed to the “Watt Institution and School of Arts”， in memory of James Watt. In 1869 women were permittedpermit n.通行证， 许可证， 执照 v.许可， 允许， 准许 to attend classes， making HeriotWatt a pioneer in equal opportunities in education.
During the 1870s a new building on Chambers Street was constructed， causing the institution severe financial difficulties that were resolved by mergingmerge v.合并， 并入， 结合， 吞没， 融合 with George Heriot，s Hospital for needy orphans. At this point the name was changed to HeriotWatt College.
The college continued to expand throughout the 20th century， developing a reputation in the fields of science and engineering， and became a university in 1966， following the recommendationsrecommendation n.推荐， 介绍（信）， 劝告， 建议 of the Robbins Report.
HeriotWatt is a researchled technological university， committed to excellence and relevance in teaching and research in a range of applied sciences， engineering and technology， textiletextile n.纺织品 adj.纺织的 design， management education and languages. HeriotWatt University was granted its charter in June 1966， following the recommendations of the Great Britain Committee on Higher Education chaired by Lord Robbins. The University traces its origins back the School of Arts of Edinburgh， founded in 1821 and susequently evolved as the Watt Institution and School of Arts （1852～1885） and HeriotWatt College （1885～1965）.
