Guinn,67,spent his boyhood(少年时代)in the small,Central Valley town of Exeter,California where he met Dema,his wife of 48years.He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physical Education from Fresno State University and later obtained a doctorate(博士头衔)in Education from Utah State University in Logan.The Guinns and their oldest son,Jeff,moved to Las Vegas in 1964where Guinn went to work for the Clark County School District as a planning specialist.Within five short years,he was named Superintendent of Schools(地方教育官员)in Clark County and served with distinction in that position until 1978.During Guinn’s tenure with the school district,his second son,Steve was born.
In his work for the Clark County School District,Guinn was recognized as an effective administrator committed to educational excellence at a time when the county was experiencing exponential(指数的,幂数的)student growth.His service to Clark County students was honored when Kenny C.Guinn Junior High School was named for him.
In 1978,Guinn began applying his management skills in business as Administrative Vice President for Nevada Savings and Loan in Las Vegas,which later became PriMerit Bank.At PriMerit,he quickly advanced through management ranks and,in 1987,was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Las Vegas-based bank.Soon thereafter,Guinn was recruited to the energy business as the President of Southwest Gas Corporation and eventually became Chairman of the Board of Directors of that utility(效用,有用)in 1993.
In 1994,Guinn was recruited by the University of Nevada Board of Regents to serve as interim(中间的,临时的)president of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.During that challenging year,he restored credibility(可信性)to the university’s prestigious(享有声望的,声望很高的)basketball program as well as instituting administrative and policy initiatives to enable the school to continue its growing success as an ever-expanding urban university.His compensation was1.00and he donated the remainder of his salary to UNLV’s student scholarship fund and other student activities.
In addition to his one-year term at UNLV,Guinn served the state in leadership roles on a variety of committees and commissions,including the Clark County Community College Advisory Committee,the UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees(托管人,保管人,理事),the White House Conference on Children and Youth,the Las Vegas Citizens Advisory Committee on Downtown Development,the Governor’s Commission on Government Reorganization,the Metropolitan Police Fiscal Affairs Committee,the Nevada Educational Development Council and the Advisory Group for Civil Justice Reform.
Guinn has also worked in his community in a variety of volunteer roles,ranging from involvement in the Boy Scouts and Pop Warner Football to the United Way of Southern Nevada and the Southern Nevada Independent Youth Athletic Association.
In addition to their two sons,the Guinns have six grandchildren.

During the 1967session(April 12th)of the legislature,Clark County Assemblyman Stan Irwin introduced a bill to designate the Mountain Bluebird(Sialia currucoides)as the Nevada state bird.The bill passed both houses and was signed by the governor on April 4th.
The Mountain Bluebird(Sialia currucoides)lives in the Nevada high country and destroys many harmful insects.It is a member of the thrush family and its song is a clear,short warble(鸟啭,颤声)like the caroling(欢唱)of a robin.The male is azure blue with a white belly,while the female is brown with a bluish rump(臀部),tail,and wings.
