Out of Control

As the man tried to swing the speedboat round, the steeringwheel came away in his hands. He waved desperately to his companion, who had been waterskiing for the last fifteen minutes. Both men had hardly had time to realize what was happening when they were thrown violently into the seaThe speedboat had struck a buoy, but it continued to move very quickly across the waterBoth men had just begun to swim towards the shore, when they noticed with dismay that the speedboat was moving in a circle. It now came straight towards them at tremendous speed. In less than a minute,it roared past them only a few feet away. After it had passed, they swam on as quickly as they could because they knew that the boat would soon return. They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle. On this occasion, however,it had slowed down considerably. The petrol had nearly all been used upBefore long, the noise dropped completely and the boat began to drift gently across the water.

A Perfect Alibi

“At the time the murder was committed,I was travelling on the 8o’clock train to London.”said the man.

“Do you always catch such an early train?”asked the inspector.

“Of course I do.”answered the man.“I must be at work at 10o’clock.My employer will confirm that I was there on time.”

“Would a later train get you to work on time?”asked the inspector.

“I suppose it would, but I never catch a later train.”

“At what time did you arrive at the station?”

“At ten to eight.I bought a paper and waited for the train.”

“And you didn’t notice anything unusual?”

“Of course not.”

“I suggest,”said the inspector,“that you are not telling the truth.I suggest that you did not catch the 8o’clock train, but that you caught the 8:25which would still get you to work on time. You see,on the morning of the murder, the 8o’clock train did not run at all.It broke down at Fergreen station and was taken off the line.”

SlowDown—Radar

Whirrr!Whirrr!Whirrr!A police siren! And a flashing red light! The police car was after me!

I pulled my station wagon over to the side of the road. The police car stopped tooAnd I got my first ticket—for speeding.

“You were going 62miles an hour.”the policeman said.

“I didn’t think I was going that fast.”I answered.

“But you were.”the policeman said“I didn’t check you.Radar did.”

“Radar to check speeding?”I asked.“How does it work?”

“I’ll show you,if you have time.”the policeman said.

I followed the policeman back down the road to another car“The radar instruments are set up here.”he said“Officer Scott is the radar man.”officer scott pointed to an instrument. This instrument is aimed at

cars coming this way.It sends out radio waves. When the radio waves hit a car, they bounce back to the instrument. But they bounce back at a different wave length. The wave length is a shouter. The faster the car is moving, the shorter the wave length.”

Then Officer Scott showed me a second instrument.“This does the arithmetic.”he said.“It shows how fast a car is moving. It showed 62when the radar checked you.I called the police car parked up the roadI said that the station wagon was doing 62.”

I knew the next part of the storyI got a ticket.

The radar man pointed to still another instrumentHe pulled out a paper that was covered with ink lines.“We have a record of your speed.”he said“See this line? This is for your car.It hits 62.”

I got that ticket year agoI didn’t know then that radar was used to check on speeding. There were no signs to warn me.

But now I see signs to warn drivers.“SPEED CHECKED BY RADAR.”the sings say.The police want drivers to know that radar is used. When drivers know their speed is checked, they drive at a safe speed. That is the reason for the warning. And that is the reason for the radar check—to make our roads safer.

All Together Now!

Have you ever heard of homemade music? That’s right—homemade music.Music that is made at home can be lots of funAnd all of the family can take part in it

“Not my family.”you may be saying. Why not?You don’t have to have good voicesAnd you don’t need to buy a musical instrumentAll that a family needs is to want to make music.

A singing game my family likes is Grazy Voices. Each person sings a different song. But everybody sings at the same time!We do sound a little crazy. But the tunes all fit together.

The trick is to use the right songs. We have lots of fun with “The Sideways of New York”,“A Bicycle Built for Two”and “In the Good Old Summertime”.

Sometimes we get all mixed up Then we just hum the songs.Or we put our hands over our ears.(That way each singer hears only himself.)Then we try it againAnd crazy voices fill the air!

There are little children in our familyFor them we get a rhythm band togetherWe don’t have any fancy instruments. We use things like egg beaters, tissue paper and combs, jugs whistles, flying pansOur best song is “Yankee Doodle”.One person gets us started. He taps out the rhythm with his foot. Then we are off!
