In the 1950s,the Business Development Corporation and the Industrial Park Authority were established to aid new businesses and attract industry to New Hampshire.Today, few of the businesses in New Hampshire are textile(纺织的)mills or shoe factories.Computer companies and tourism are the growing industry.
In the 1980s,New Hampshire produced many new jobs and had one of the fastest growing economies in the United States. The state benefits from its close proximity(接近,亲近)to the Boston metropolitan area with its many hightechnology firms, but when Massachusetts experiences a recession like that of the late 1980s and early 90s,New Hampshire is similarly affected.

Inaugurated as New Hampshire’s 80th Governor in January 2005,John Lynch is bringing a renewed spirit of bipartisan(两党连立的)cooperation to the State House and working to make progress on the issues important to New Hampshire families improving education, reducing health care costs, protecting the environment, and creating good jobs.
In his first months in office,Gov.Lynch joined with bipartisan coalitions of legislators to pass legislation to stabilize health care costs for small businesses;to eliminate(排除,消除)a projected300million budget deficit;and to make progress on education funding, pushing successfully for the virtual elimination of donor towns.
Gov.Lynch recently proposed the Child Protection Act,one of the toughest and most comprehensive efforts in the country to protect children against sexual predators(掠夺者,食肉动物).The Act has 28provisions,including allowing prosecutors(检举人)to seek a mandatory minimum sentence of 25years for someone who sexually preys on a child.
Gov.Lynch’s commitment to putting the interests of people first is an extension of his work as a business and community leader.
As the President and CEO of Knoll,Inc.,a national furniture manufacturer,he transformed a company losing 50million a year into one making a profit of nearly 240million.Under his leadership,Knoll created new jobs, gave factory workers annual bonuses(奖金,红利),established a scholarship program for the children of employees, created retirement(退休)plans for employees who didn’t have any,and gave workers stock in the company.
Gov.Lynch has also served as chair of the University System Board of Trustees, where he worked to keep tuition(学费)increases to a minimum;as director of Admissions at the Harvard Business School, where he made ethics one of the criteria(标准)for admissions;and as president of the Lynch Group,a businessconsulting firm in Manchester.
Long a community leader,John Lynch served on the board of Catholic Medical Center in Manchester and on the board of the Capitol Center for the Arts.He is the past president of the UNH alumni association, and a longtime coach of youth soccer, hockey(曲棍球),softball(垒球运动,垒球)and baseball.

State Bird
The purple finch is hereby designated as the official state bird of New Hampshire. The pert(活跃的)little purple finch toppled the onetime sturdy(强健的)New Hampshire hen to become the Granite State’s official bird,by vote of the 1957Legislature.
Rep.Robert S.Monahan of Hanover, then Dartmouth College forester, sponsored a purple finch bill, which was filed in the House of Representatives on February 12,Lincoln’s birthday anniversary(周年纪念),with impressive backing. He later testified(证明,证实)that it bore the support of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs, and the State Federation of Women’s Clubs.
The purple finch proposal ran into quick opposition.Rep.Doris M.Spollett of Hampstead, veteran(经验丰富的)legislator and mail carrier and breeder of prize goats, once again sponsored the New Hampshire hen for a state bird. She had lost an initial bid for this special breed of hen,to become the official bird, eight years earlier, while serving in the Senate.
Monahan won speedy(快的)approval(赞成,承认,正式批准)for the purple finch,as his bill came up for public hearing before the House Committee on Recreation,Resources and Development on March 27,as he urged quick enactment“before some other state beats us to it”.
The purple finch readily mustered(集合,集聚)broad legislative support, because of the respected influence of its sponsoring organizations, and Miss Spollett’s hen bill became pigeonhold. The House Committee on Recreation(消遣,娱乐),Resources and Development held a March 27public hearing on Monahan’s bill, and promptly recommended its passage. The House then passed the purple finch, and the Senate speedily concurred.Governor Lane Dwinell of Lebanon signed the purple finch into law on April 25.
