Thinking...

Thinking of Xin the Eldest in South Pavilion on a Summer Evening

Thinking of Xin the Eldest in South Pavilion on a Summer Evening

Meng Haoran

Suddenly the sun o’er the mount sets in the west;

Slowly rises the moon o’er the pond in the east.

With hair loosened and by cool evening air caressed,

I lie in a large room with open windows, much eased.

The breeze from the lotus sends sweet-scented breath in;

The dew from the bamboos drips with a ticktack sound.

Playing my stringed instrument I want to begin,

But none that appreciate my playing can be found.

That is why bitterly I miss you, my old friend,

And all night I’ve been troubled by dreams without end.
