Receiving a Guest

Receiving a Guest

Du Fu

On the south and north of my cottage are waters of spring;

Every day only groups of gulls to come here themselves bring.

As there are few comers, we haven’t swept the floral pathway,

Nor opened our humble gate till we greet you here to-day.

Far from market, we can’t have delicious food as we wish,

And home-brewed wine is all my needy household can furnish.

I’ll ask an old neighbour to drink with us, if you don’t care,

And toast the last few cups together across the fence there.
