Song of Running-Horse River in Farewell to General Feng on His Western Expedition

Song of Running-Horse River in Farewell to

General Feng on His Western Expedition

Cen Shen

See you not:

The Running-Horse River flows by a sea of snow

Where sands are vast that rise up to the sky yellow!

In Luntai, the roaring winds of ninth moon blow

Stones of the river bed, each as big as a Dou,

And make them scatter ’bout as they the winds follow.

Strong are the Hunnish horses while grasses yellow lie;

West of the Gold Mount, mists of dusts are seen to fly;

The Han general goes westward with his army.

He has his iron armour on all the night;

With spears clashing, his army march on at mid-night;

As pointed swords cut their faces, the winds them bite.

Horses’manes with snow are steamed by sweat vapourized

And soon are frozen horse hairs diversely patternized;

In the tent, ink for drafting calls is also iced.

On hearing this, the enemies must be cowardly;

In the hand-to-hand fight they are sure to flee;

At the Cheshi west gate, we’ll expect news of victory.
