Song of White Snow in Farewell to Secretary Wu Going Back to the Capital

Song of White Snow in Farewell to Secretary Wu

Going Back to the Capital

Cen Shen

The north wind whirls round the ground, breaking the white grass;

In Tartar, an eighth moon snowing has come to pass.

As if the spring breeze suddenly came back o’ernight

To turn thousands of pear trees here in full bloom white.

Snowflakes spread through pearl curtains and make silk

screens wet;

From no fox furs nor brocade quilts can one warmth get.

The general can hardly have his horn bow drawn;

The commissioner’s armour’s too cold to put on.

O’er the vast desert, hundred-zhang ice lies wavy;

Ten-thousand-li bleak clouds condense and look heavy.

In the head-quarters, we drink to our homebound guest;

Huqins, pipas and Qiang flutes are played to their best.

O’er the camp gate is densely falling evening snow;

The frozen flags won’t flutter, though the winds hard blow.

At the east gate of Luntai we bid you good-bye;

On the Tian Mount’s paths heavy snows everywhere lie.

A few turns of the Mount soon make you disappear;

In vain are your horse-hoof prints left in the snow here.
