第78章 丽人行-A Song of Fair Ladies

A Song of Fair Ladies

Du Fu

Of the year’s third moon, it is the third day.

The air is refreshing and makes one gay.

On a riverside in Chang’an City

Swarm many noble ladies of beauty.

High in spirits, charming in appearance,

They are brimming with truth and elegance.

So fine and smooth has their skin texture grown

And so well-ballanced are their flesh and bone!

Their gorgeous embroidered silk clothing

Glitters with strong brilliance in the late spring,

Having golden peacock patterns thereon

And also those of silver unicorn.

What on their heads can they be?

They are hair adornments made of jadeite

That dangle below their temples downright.

What at their backs can one see?

There are beautiful skirts with pearls inlaid

Which to fit them perfectly are well made.

Among them a few are relations near

Of Young, the Imperial concubine dear,

Including the two ladies that had been

Enfeoffed with the Kingdoms of Guo and Qin.

Taken out from bronze cauldrons luxurious,

Stewed humps of camels smell so delicious.

While crystal plates are among them passed on,

Well-cooked white fish are seen lying thereon.

Rhinoceros-horn chopsticks are kept still

For they all have eaten and drunk their fill.

Vainly are cooks busy in cutting things

With the kitchen knives that can cause bells’ rings.

Eunucks on horseback gallope at high speed

With no cloud of dust ever raised indeed.

Imperial cooks in a stream without end

Come busily various dainties to send.

Full of pathos are flute notes and drumbeats

That seem to have moved the very spirits.

Their retainers in a confused cluster

Block up the roads wherever they muster.

See how leisurely trots the bridled steed

That comes the last but is of the best breed.

At the gate, off the horse the rider gets

And steps in, treading on costly carpets.

Like snowflakes the catkins heavily fall,

Covering the white duckweeds one and all.

The messenger blue-birds are sent away

To carry red kerchiefs of women gay.

Such a man of unsurpassed influence

Is ’deed scorching to one in his presence.

Don’t come near the Prime Minister for fear

Of his anger for which you will pay dear.
