采访比尔·盖茨

比尔盖茨作为全球首富,也是大名鼎鼎的企业家,对于商业很有自己的见解。

David: Do you feel like you saw the movement towards thebusiness market out of the hottest market soon enough.

大卫:你觉得这个热潮在商业领域快到头了吗?

Bill Gates: Well, the key to the move to the business marketwas getting a machine with more capability, and getting astandard, although you could exchange some basic programsbetween these 8-bit machines. If you went and used any of theadvanced features then you were just tied to that one machine.

So, it wasnt all that economical to write lots of softwarefor these machines. And the 8-bit machines maxed out at64K of memory. And even though I wrote BASIC in 4K, 64Kseemed like a lot, but as we started taking on more and morechallenges, it just wasnt going to be enough. And since wewere tracking what Intel was doing very closely, in building thenext generation chip, their 8086 family, including the very lowcostpart called the 8088, we knew that 16-bit computing wason its way. We saw that it could be a good business machineand we decided to focus a lot of early work on that Intel chip.
