Instead, open the door slowly and hold the handle until itshuts.

2. Never walk in front of the professor.

Not only it is rude - it also makes the professor lose theirtrain of thought. If it is a larger classroom, doing this couldmuffle the professor's voice for those sitting in the back.

3. Don't make an announcement that you are late (or anydisruptive comment).

This is the quickest way to irritate your professor. It’sinappropriate to raise your hand to say that you are late andwould like to know what is going on.

4. Make it your responsibility to find out what you missedafter class.

If you immediately turn to the students around you, it isdisrupting their concentration and note-taking. Instead, ask ifyou can see their notes after class or before the next meeting.

The professor will have extra materials at the end of class andcan quickly tell you the main announcements.

5. Apologize for being late, but skip the long-windedreason why.

Simply tell the professor that you are sorry and emphasizethat you will try to make this a one-time occurrence. Honestly,it really doesn't matter if you overslept or couldn’t find aparking spot. The long reasons why you were late are usuallysaid in a way that makes you look irresponsible.

If you know you're going to be late in advance (e.g.,you have a doctor appointment), it is courteous to email yourprofessor before class. In your email, state when you expectto arrive, let the instructor know you will come in quietly andstate that you will take responsibility for finding out what youhave missed.

Mike: Hi, Julie. Have a seat. What can I do for you?

Julie: I've been meaning to talk to you about the trouble I have in class.

I'm having trouble understanding the lectures. Is there anything youwould suggest?

Mike: Some students tape of the lectures and listen to them afterwards.

That seems to help.

Julie: That's a great idea. I'll definitely try that. I'm wondering if you giveextra credit in your class.

Mike: No, I don't give extra credit assignments. But if you're worriedabout passing, there are still two more tests to pull up your grade.

Julie: Yes, I'll study hard for those. Thanks a lot for your time.

Mike: No problem. See you in class.

Julie: Okay, Professor Mike, see you Thursday.

Thomas: Take it easy. Actually her class is fun and interesting, althoughthe rules are a bit tricky, no phones are allowed to bring in and everyoneshould show up on time.

Mason: It sounds horrible but good for concentrating on the class.

Thomas: Yeah, she likes to ask questions or challenges us on critical thinking.

Mason: We'd better preview all the materials every time.
