jail与prison：
美国用jail，英国用gaol n.监狱，作宾语时，前不加冠词，如be sent to jail入狱， break jail越狱。jail 在英国多指收容轻罪犯的民事监狱，在美国指拘留要判刑的犯人的看守所；prison为一般用词，指监禁犯人的处所，其犯人有判刑的，也有待审的。
