第20章 Wisdom of Life生活智慧(1)

Love Your Life

However mean your life is,meet it and live it ;do not shunshun vt.避开,避免 it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are.It looks poorest when you are richest. The faultfinder will find faults in paradiseparadise n. Love your life, poor as it is.You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrillingthrilling adj. 光荣的,显赫的 hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich mans abode;the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts,as in a palace. The towns poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town;but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means.which should be more disreputabledisreputable adj. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old, return to them.Things do not change;we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

“Packaging”a Person

A person, like a commoditycommodity n.日用品,needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration, however, does no harm when it shows the persons unique qualities to their advantage. To display personal charm in a casual and natural way,it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A master packager knows how to integrateintegrate vt. 结合 art and nature without any traces of embellishment,so that the person so packaged is no commodity but a human being, lively and lovely.

A young person, especially a female, radiant with beauty and full of life, has all the favor grantedgrant vt. Any attempt to make up would be selfdefeating. Youth, however, comes and goes in a moment of doze. Packaging for the middleaged is primarily to conceal the furrows ploughed by time. If you still enjoy lifes exuberance enough to retain selfconfidence and pursue pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your charm and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and junglesjungle n.丛林,生死关头,running its course as it should. You have really lived your life which now arrives at a complacentcomplacent adj.自满的,得意的 stage of serenity indifferent to fame or wealth. There is no need to resort to hairdyeing-the snowcapped mountain is itself a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old synchronizing with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmonyharmony n.协调,融洽 with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the elders company is like reading a thick book of deluxe edition that fascinates one so much as to be reluctantreluctant adj.

As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity establishes its brand by the right packaging.

Give Us 15 Minutes a Day

Your boss has a bigger vocabulary than you have.

Thats one good reason why hes your boss.

This discovery has been made in the word laboratories of the world. Not by theoreticaltheoretical 理论的 English professors, but by practical, hardheaded scholars who have been searching for the secrets of success.

After a host of experiments and years of testing they have found out:

That if your vocabulary is limited your chances of success are limited.

That one of the easiest and quickest ways to get ahead is by consciouslyconsciously adv.有意识地,自觉地 building up your knowledge of words.

That the vocabulary of the average person almost stops growing by the middle twenties.

And that from then on it is necessary to have an intelligent plan if progress is to be made. No haphazardhaphazard n. 偶然地 hitormiss methods will do.

It has long since been satisfactorily established that a high executive does not have a large vocabulary merely because of the opportunities of his position. That would be putting the cart before the horse. Quite the reversereverse n. His skill in words was a tremendous help in getting him his job.

Dr. Johnson O Connor of thee Human Engineering Laboratory of Boston and of the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken,New Jersey, gave a vocabulary test to 100 young men who were studying to be industrial executivesexecutive adj.

Five years later those who had passed in the upper ten percent of all, without exception, had executive positions, while not a single young man of the lower twentyfive per cent had become an executive.

You see, there are certain factors in success that can be measured as scientifically as the contents of a testtube, and it has been discovered that the most common characteristic of outstanding success is “an extensive knowledge of the exact meaning of English words”.
