第24章 Wisdom of Life生活智慧(5)

Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them: Work,Family,Health,Friends,Spirit. And you re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it,it will bounce back. But the other four balls-family,health,friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocablyirrevocably adv. 拖着脚走,磨损之处 ,marked, nicked ,damaged or even shatteredshatter n. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.

How?

Dont undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Dont set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.

Dont take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would cling to your life, for without them, life is meaningless.

Dont let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.

Dont give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Dont be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragilefragile adj.易碎的,脆的 thread that binds us each together.

Dont be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

Dont shut love out of your life by saying it s impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Dont run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going.

“There”Is No Better Than “Here”

Many people believe that they will be happy once they arrive at some specific goals they set for themselves. However, more often than not, once you arrive “there” you will still feel dissatisfied, and move your “ there” vision to yet another point in the future. By always chasing after another “there,” you are never really appreciating what you already have right “here.” It is important for human beings to keep sobermindedsoberminded adj.头脑清醒的,自我节制的,严肃的,持重的about the ageold drive to look beyond the place where you now stand. On one hand, your life is enhanced by your dreams and aspirations. On the other hand, these drives can pull you farther and farther from your enjoyment of your life right now. By learning the lessons of gratitude and abundance, you can bring yourself closer to fulfilling the challenge of living in the present.

GratitudeTo be gratefulgrateful adj.感激的,感谢的 eans you are thankful for and appreciativeappreciative adj欣赏的,有欣赏力的,表示感激的,承认有价值的 of what you have and where you are on your path right now. Gratitude fills your heart with the joyful feeling and allows you to fully appreciate everything that arises on your path. As you strive to keep your focus on the present moment, you can experience the full wonder of “here.”

There are many ways to cultivate gratitude. Here are just a few suggestions you may wish to try:

1. Imagine what your life would be like if you lost all that you had. This will most surely remind you of how much you do appreciate it.

2. Make a list each day of all that you are grateful for,so that you can stay conscious daily of your blessings. Do this especially when you are feeling as though you have nothing to feel grateful for. Or spend a few minutes before you go to sleep giving thanks for all that you have.

3. Spend time offering assistanceassistance n.协助,援助,补助,(英)国家补助 to those who are less fortunate than you,so that you may gain perspective.

However you choose to learn gratitude is irrelevantirrelevant adj. What really matters is that you create a space in your consciousness for appreciation for all that you have right now,so that you may live more joyously in your present moment.

Abundanceabundance n. One of the most common human fears is scarcity. Many people are afraid of not having enough of what they need or want, and so they are always striving to get to a point when they would finally have enough.

Alan and Linda always dreamed of living “the good life.” Both from poor workingclass families, they married young and set out to fulfill their mutual goal of becoming wealthy. They both worked very hard for years, amassing a small fortune,so they could move from their twobedroom home to a palatial sevenbedroom home in the most upscaleupscale adj.(美)高消费阶层的,迎合高层次消费者的,(商品)质优价高的 neighborhood. They focused their energies on accumulating all the things they believed signified abundance: membership in the local exclusive country club, luxury cars, designer clothing, and highclass society friends. No matter how much they accumulated, however,it never seemed to be enough.
