As Ulysses passed down to his seat at the banquet,he saw the kings lovely daughter,Nausicaa, standing alone by a pillar. She caugh the eye of the handsome prince, and cried:“Great prince, may you successful in getting home to your own people;and when you are there, may you sometimes think of the princess Nausicaa, who was the first to give you help.”

Ulysses replied:“It is indeed my hope that, with the help of your kind father,I may win safely home.If I do so I shall always think of you with gratitude gratitude n.感谢的心情,because of your great service to me.”

When all were seated at the feast,Ulysses requested that Demodocus should be allowed to tell the story of the Wooden Horse and the downfall downfall n. Demodocus sang so well that the tears ran down Ulyssescheeks, and when the story was ended he did his face and sobbed.

At last Alcinous arose.“Let the minstrel be silent.”he commanded.“And you, sir,”he continued, turning to Ulysses,“who have wept ever since the minstrel beagn his tale, take note that we have shown you every kindness, given you gifts, and arranged this entertainment in your honour. We now beg you to be equally kind to us:to tell us what we are burning to know—your name, your parentage, the story of your travels, and all the great sorrow which weighs upon your heart.Let every man give ear,”he continued, turning to the noble lords before him,“for we now require from our guest a full account of his life and wanderings. We are impatient for him to lift for us the veil of secrecy which hangs over him.Peace now,all of you,and attend.”

So all faces were turned towards Ulysses where he sat on his throne throne n. For a moment he was silent as if in doubt;but at last he spoke.

“Great Alcinous,I will tell you everything-but where shall I begin my take? For just as my sorrows seem to have no ending,so I find it hard to say where they had their beginning.Yet I would have you all hear my story,so that in future I may number you among my friends. And first I must tell you my name;then I will repeat the story of my adventures, right from the day when I left Troy to the very moment when I was cast up on your shores.”
