The bride asked，“What is my dear brother saying？” “Ah，” said the old woman，“he says you must look out of the carriage.” They happened to be on a bridge，which crossed deep water. When the bride stood up and leant forward out of the carriage，they both pushed her out，and she fell into the middle of the water. At the same moment that she sank，a snowwhite duck arose out of the mirrorsmooth water，and swam down the river. The brother had observed nothing of it，and drove the carriage on until they reached the court. Then he took the black maiden to the king as his sister，and thought she really was so，because his eyes were dim，and he saw the golden garments glitteringglitter vi.闪闪发光，闪烁，闪光。 When the king saw the boundless ugliness of his intended bride，he was very angry，and ordered the coachman to be thrown into a pit which was full of addersadder n.[计］加法器，[动］（欧洲产）蝰蛇（小毒蛇），（北美产无毒的）猪鼻蛇 and nests of snakes. One evening when the black bride was sitting on the kings knee，a white duck came swimming up the guttergutter n.水槽，檐槽，排水沟，槽，贫民区 to the kitchen，and said to the kitchenboy，“Boy，light a fire，that I may warm my feathers.”
一天晚上，黑新娘正坐在国王怀里，一只白色的鸭子从下水道游进了宫里的厨房，对厨师的小帮工说：“小哥小哥，请快生火，
让我把羽毛暖和暖和。”
The kitchenboy did it，and lighted a fire on the hearthhearth n.壁炉地面，炉边，家庭（生活），炉膛。 Then came the duck and sat down by it，and shook herself and smoothed her feathers to rights with her bill. While she was thus sitting and enjoying herself，she asked，“What is my brother Reginer doing？”
小伙子照办了，在灶里生起火来。鸭子走过去坐在旁边，一会儿抖动身子，一会用喙儿梳理羽毛。她这么坐着烤火烤舒服了，便问：“我的哥哥雷吉纳怎么样？”
The sculleryboy replied，“He is imprisoned in the pit with adders and with snakes.”
小帮工回答：
“他被关在蛇坑里，
已给咬得遍体鳞伤！”
Then she asked，“What is the black witch doing in the house？”
她又问：
“那黑丑婆，她在宫里做什么？”
The boy answered，“She is loved by the king and happy.”
小帮工回答：
“她坐在国王怀中，非常暖和。”
“May God have mercy on me.” said the duck，and swam forth by the gutter.
鸭子说：
“上帝怜悯我呦！”
说完又从下水道游出去了。
The next night she came again and put the same questions，and the third night also. Then the kitchenboy could bear it no longer，and went to the king and revealed all to him. The king，however，wanted to see it for himself，and next evening went thither，and when the duck thrust her head in through the gutter，he took his sword and cut through her neck，and suddenly she changed into a most beautiful maiden，exactly like the picture，which her brother had made of her. The king was full of joy，and as she stood there quite wet，he caused splendid apparelapparel n.衣服，装饰 to be brought and had her clothed in it. Then she told how she had been betrayed by cunningcunning n.狡猾，诡诈 and falsehoodfalsehood n.谬误，不真实，谎言，虚假，and at last thrown down into the water，and her first request was that her brother should be brought forth from the pit of snakes，and when the king had fulfilled this request，he went into the chamber where the old witch was，and asked if she knew the punishment for one who does this and that，and related what had happened. Then was she so blinded that she was aware of nothing and said，“She deserves to be stripped naked，and put into a barrel with nails，and that a horse should be harnessed to the barrel，and the horse sent all over the world.” All of which was done to her，and to her black daughter. But the king married the white and beautiful bride，and rewarded her faithful brother，and made him a rich and distinguisheddistinguished adj.卓著的，著名的，高贵的 man.
第二天晚上，她又来问同样的问题；第三天晚上又来了一次。这样子，小帮工再也不忍心不管，便去见国王，向他说出了一切。国王呢，想亲自看一看，第二天晚上去到厨房，一等鸭子从下水道里探出头来，他便拔出剑来，砍断它的脖子，突然，鸭子变成了美丽无比的少女，跟她哥哥画上画的那个一模一样。国王大喜，见她站在那儿全身湿淋淋的，就命令送来华丽的衣服给她穿上。接着，她告诉国王自己怎么受了蒙蔽欺骗，最后被推进了河里。她的第一个请求是：快放她哥哥出蛇坑。国王先满足了这个请求，然后走进老巫婆待的房间，问她：“一个干了种种坏事的女人，应该得到什么报应？” 接着便列举出所有的事情。老巫婆呢一点没察觉是咋回事，因此回答：“该扒光她的衣服，关她在一只钉满钉子的桶里，在桶前面套一匹马，让马拉着桶全世界跑去。” 结果就完全照这样处治了老巫婆和她的黑女儿。国王随后娶了洁白而美丽的真新娘，并给了她忠诚的哥哥奖赏，使他成了一位富有而体面的人。
