All ordinary images.

By chance they emerge in a dream,

Turning out infinite new patterns.

It’s all ordinary feelings,

All ordinary words.

By chance they encounter a poet,

Turning out infinite new verses.

Once intoxicated,one learns the strength of wine,

Once smitten,one learns the power of love:

You cannot write my poems

Just as I cannot dream your dreams.

梦与诗

都是平常经验,

都是平常影象,

偶然涌到梦中来,

变幻出多少新奇花样!

都是平常情感,

都是平常言语,

偶然碰着个诗人,

变幻出多少新奇诗句!

醉过才知酒浓,

爱过才知情重;

你不能做我的诗,

正如我不能做你的梦。

背景知识

胡适(1891-1962),安徽绩溪上庄村人。他集现代著名诗人、历史家、文学家和哲学家于一身,且因提倡文学革命而成为新文化运动的领袖之一。

这是一首节奏明快、主题明确的哲理诗。梦和诗是相对独立的概念,也许在一般人看来,找不出任何关联,而在作者眼中,做诗和做梦却是相通的:我做我的诗,你做你梦,只有投身其中,才能体会到乐趣。诗和梦可以相互引用,却不能取而代之。
