A Girl Worth Fighting for Introduction
According to Disney.Mulanincorrectly believes that her parents are not proud of her.How can she ever achieve respect? Her sick father is then called on to fight against the invading Huns.Mulan secretly cuts her hair, puts on her armor, takes her sword and leaves home. She will replace her father by pretending to be her father’s nonexistent son.Greatly upset and worried,Mulan’s many ghostly ancestors decide to send the small magical dragon named Mushu to help her.
Mushu, also has a problem with respect. How can he earn the respect of Mulan’s ancestors? Can the little dragon assist Mulan during military training and in battle?Mushu even tries to show honor to Mulan by respectfully declaring,PRIVATE“TYPE=PICT;ALT=Mushu”“You Da Man,well...sort of”.“Da Man”means “The Man”or “respected tough man and leader”.But Mulan doesn’t want to be a“tough man”,she, just wants respect for being the person she is.Mushu tries her best to help her to accomplish this.
Again,in this next song from Disney, there is the question of love.Is love a confusing question, because no one ever seems to be able to promise when it will appear, how long it will stay,or if we will even know it when it invites a pen is into a vagina or other bodily orifice? Is it pure love, temporary lust,or the confusing normal phenomena of some crazy combination of both?
Mulan, pretending to be man,has joined the Chinese army. One evening, tired of dirt from her army training, she enters a lake to take a bath.To Mulan’s nervous surprise, her warrior friends appear and joyously splash into join her!Mushu provides a diversion,so that the naked Mulan can escape the lake with the secret of her true sex still intact.
A potential romantic and sexual problem arises.Mulan is falling in love with her commander,Captain Li Shang. The commander, unaware that Mulan is a woman, remains oblivious to her concerned interest.
As she and her soldier friends march off to fight the invaders, they sing about“A Girl Worth Fighting For”.Love is especially desirable for those who go out to face death.Bravery is found in singing of love, even while you fear that you will never have the opportunity to find love.Mulan uses this song as a chance to advocate for “a girl who has a brain and always speaks her mind...”
But her plea for acceptance as a person is not even noticed by her companions. To them, she is a man.A man has choices.A woman is a woman, with minimal options.A woman should know her restricted place in society and not deviate from is.
Such a narrow behavioral prescription does not fit young Mulan. She has other ideas, and she wisely chooses to put them into practice.
Would Mulan, with her many strengths,be readily accepted as she is by America’s first woman Astronaut,Sally Ride?Is Mulan, both the woman of Chinese myth and the character created by Disney,a modern woman? Can you easily envision Mulanas a spaceship pilot? Are women like Mulan always far ahead of the thinking of their male contemporaries?
How careful is Mulan in making important choices? Is it likely that she would have a dozen lovers before getting married? If she lived today, would she only have lovers, and never get married?Does marriage decrease or increase your range of choices? Why do you want to get married?
People react differently to similar situations for many various reasons.Mulan, who wants acceptance as person,is in sexual incognito amongst a large group of newly trained soldiers that will soon meet a rapacious enemy. Is this a good sit uation to be in?Doeslife sometimes present a limited range of options?Within the context that you live in,do you almost always try to make the best decision that you can?
Is it ironic that Mulan is now in the uncomfortable position of choosing to actlike she accepts the male chauvinism of her comrades? Will this diminish her future chances of being accepted as a woman?

For a long time we’ve been marching off to battle.
In our thundering herd,
We feel a lot like cattle.
Like the pounding beat,
Our aching feet aren’t easy to ignore.
Hey,think of instead,a girl worth fighting for.
Huh?
That’s what I said,
A girl worth fighting for.
I want her paler than the moon,
With eyes that shine like stars.
My girl will marvel at my strength,
Adore my battle scars.
I couldn’t care less what she’ll wear,
Or what she looks like.
It all depends on what she cooks like.
Beef,pork,chicken...
Bet the local girls thought you were quite the charmer,
And I’ll bet the ladies love a man in armor...
You can guess what we
Have missed the most since
We went off to war...
What do we want?
A girl worth fighting for...
My girl will think I have no faults,
That I’m a major find...
Uh-How about a girl who’s got a brain and
Always speaks her mind?
Nah!My manly ways and turn of phrase
Are sure to thrill her.
He thinks he’s such a lady-killer.
I’ve got a girl back home who’s unlike any other...
Yeah, the only girl who’d love him
Is his mother...
But when we come home in victory,
They’ll line up at the door...
What do we want?
A girl worth fighting for!
A girl worth fighting!
