Michigan State University (MSU) is a public research university located in East Lansing, Michigan, United States. It opened in 1857 as Michigan Agricultural College, the first state agricultural college. As the first agricultural college in the United States, it served as a model for future Land Grant colleges under the 1862 Morrill Act.From 1925 to 1959 it was known as Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, and in 1964 its present name was adopted. The oldest part of campus lies on the north bank of the Red Cedar. The campus south of the river consists mostly of post-World War II International Style buildings with sparse foliage, relatively straight roadways, and numerous parking lots. Wells Hall is a sprawling classroom and office building just south of the Red Cedar River. Michigan State University Ombudsman is the oldest continually operating ombudsman office at a college or university in the country. MSU pioneered the studies of packaging, hospitality business, supply chain management, and telecommunication.Its study-abroad program is the largest of any single-campus university in the country, offering more than 200 programs in more than 60 countries on all continents including Antarctica.

Outstanding research: In 1877, botany professor William J. Beal performed the first documented genetic crosses to produce hybrid corn, which led to increased yields. MSU dairy professor G. Malcolm Trout invented the process for the homogenization of milk in the 1930s. In the 1960s, MSU scientists developed cisplatin, a leading cancer fighting drug.
