Untitled Poems

I

You said you would come, but really gone tracelessly you are;

I wake to hear the bell strike five and see the bower in moonlight.

In the dream I cried but failed to call you back from afar;

Hastily I write a letter with ink still thin and light.

On half the caged golden halcyon, the candle light glistens;

The musk smell gently spreads to the lotus-embroidered curtain.

To Liu’s regret, the fairy-mountain lies at too far a distance;

But you’re at a place e’en farther than the fairy-mountain.

Along with drizzling rains are soughing the eastern winds swift;

Beyond the Hibiscus Pond is heard the faint thundering sound.

With golden toad locked, perfume can still through the burner drift;

With jade-tiger winch can be drawn up well-water underground.

Lady Jia peeped at young Han through the curtain in her room;

To Wei’s talented prince, pillow was left by Mi Princess.

I dare not, to vie with the flowers, let my thoughts of love bloom,

Lest my heart should be consumed inch by inch by lovesickness.
