苏武魂销汉使前,古祠高树两茫然。

云边雁断胡天月,陇上羊归塞草烟。

回日楼台非甲帐,去时冠剑是丁年。

茂陵不见封侯印,空向秋波哭逝川。

When Su Wu met Han’s envoy, of broken heart he would die;

But now so calm remain his old shrine and tall trees around.

Wild geese alongside the clouds obscured the moon in Hu’s sky;

His sheep going back, the frontier grass grew misty, he found.

When he returned at last, towers but not armed tents he could see,

Though he was a youth with cap and sword when he went away.

The late Emperor couldn’t witness how highly honoured was he;

In vain he cried o’er the autumn waves for the past each day!
