Climbing the Pagoda at Ci’en Temple with Gao Shi and Xue Ju

Climbing the Pagoda at Ci’en Temple with Gao Shi and Xue Ju

Cen Shen

Like something shot forth from the earth’s surface

The pagoda alone towers to the sky.

To climb it just seems out the world to pace;

Its winding stone steps in the air bare lie.

Surpassing all others in the country,

It’s like a structure of genie’s workmanship.

The sun is screened by its four corners high,

And heaven, touched by its seventh storey’s tip.

Lowering your head, you point high soaring birds;

Inclining your ears, you hear dreadful gale.

Unbroken, wavelike mountains run eastwards

As if to their sovereign they would hail.

Locust trees line both sides of the post-road,

And how exquisite are those palaces.

From the west comes autumn’s dark green-tint broad,

Which all the inside-pass lands embraces.

The five tombs of emperors on the north plain

Are forever green and misty remain.

So Buddhist truth you can the better see

And believe in Good Cause it has forth set.

Sure, an official I’ll no longer be,

For from Buddhism endless power I can get.
