[2] How much did you pay for your watch battery?

A: Robin, I was wondering if there are any right or wrong ways to make a phone call? I have been learning English for a long time and still can,t make a correct phone call!

D: Well, The most important is to always introduce yourself politely. A common mistake that many Chinese people make is to say: “I am …” when in fact you should say “ This is …”.

This is……

A: Oh, I will have to remember that!

D: Another thing that might interest you is, you should never say “ I want to talk to…” or “ Who am I talking to”, these are both considered rude. A better way is to say “ Could I please speak to…” or “May I ask whose speaking?”

A: You,re right. That does sound so much more polite!

D: Another thing to remember is that there are different ways of conducting phone calls depending on who you are talking to, i.e. If you are talking to someone about business or work it is always best to be as formal as possible. When you talk to friends however, you can be very informal…

A: What do you mean by informal?

D: I mean, instead of answering the phone “Hello, this is…speaking” You can say things like “What,s up, who,s this?” and “Hey what,s going on?”

A: OK, I see.

D: There are some more “rules” that I can give if you are interested.

A: Sure! What?

当然!

D: It is a good idea to ask someone if they are busy before you start \having\ a long conversation. In my opinion it is a good idea to keep phone calls as brief as possible…

A: [chuckles] Why make your calls short?

D: Well for one thing, it keeps your phone bills low (laughs) and another is many people are busy, and don,t have time to chat away for a long time.

A:I think you are right. Speaking of which, I need to go myself, a movie I want to see is coming on TV…I,ll talk to you later.

D: OK, talk to you later.

Attention Please (特别提醒)

[1]This is…

[2]Could I speak to… May I ask who is speaking? Who am I talking to?或是I want to talk to…

或What,s going on?

A: A brief is shorter and tight, while a boxer is like a square, you know the stuff that a boxing man wears.

B: Oh,I got it. Thank you so much.

A: You are welcome.Anything else?

B:I guess no,Ok,got to go .Byebye,

A:Bye.

再见。

[1]Can you break a bill? 另一种换零钱的方法是Can you make change?还有一个关于break的用法是Give me a break.

Does this machine accept bills?

B: If you want the driver to go faster.Just say “Step on it.”

就说Step on it。

A: What does that mean?

B: Step on it means step on the gas.

A: Got it.

To hail a taxi当然也可以叫做to hail a cab。 Let me hail a cab for you。

如水表是a water meter。
