On Hearing An Wanshan Play the Tartar Reed-Pipe

On Hearing An Wanshan Play the Tartar Reed-Pipe

Li Qi

Of the South Mountain bamboo is made the Bili,

An instrument first coming from the tribe Quici.

Now in the Han lands, popular it grows to be,

A Tartar from Liangzhou is playing it for me.

On hearing it, most of my neighbours heave deep sigh

And strangers from afar are homesick and shed tears.

Men enjoy it but to appreciate it ne’er try,

Its tune is like free-moving wind that itself steers,

Freezing the withered mulberry and old cypress,

Making many young phoenixes cry in a mess,

Arousing at once dragons’ wails and tigers’ roars,

Mustering all sounds and various springs at autumn’s doors.

All of a sudden, to Yuyang Drumbeats it comes,

Yellow clouds turn bleak and the white sun dark becomes.

Then soon is heard a turn to Spring in the Willow,

Myriad flowers in the royal garden shine bright so.

On New Year’s Eve, candles are lighted in the great hall;

For each cup of wine, a new tune will us enthrall.
