Ascending Mount Tianmu in a Dream —A Song of Farewell

Ascending Mount Tianmu in a Dream — A Song of Farewell

Li Bai

Of fairy hills in the sea, seafarers will speak,

But in dim mist and vast waves, they are hard to seek.

Talking ’bout Mount Tianmu, Yue people have e’er been;

Through clouds and rainbows coming or going, it may be seen.

Mount Tianmu leads to the sky and across it lies,

O’erpowers the Five Peaks and Mount Red City defies.

Mount Tiantai, though forty-eight thousand zhang in height,

Will crumble down in the south-east, where it’s in sight.

Their chat makes me long to have a Yue roam in dream.

O’er Mirror Lake I flew one night in the moonbeams.

The lake moon continues on my shadow to gleam

And accompanies me till I have reached Shan Stream.

Where the poet Xie once lived is seen to remain;

Clear water waves and gibbons wail with might and main.

When I’ve put Xie’s shoes on my feet, one for foot each,

I tread on mountain paths to come in blue clouds’ reach.

Halfway up the mount, I see the sun rise at sea,

And heaven cocks’ crows in the air are heard by me.

Myriads of cliffs and turns make uncertain the way;

With my clinging to rocks and flowers, darkens the day.

Bears’ roars and dragons’ howls round rocky springs rumble

And make the woods shudder and piles of peaks tremble.

It looks like rain, so densely are the clouds clustering;

O’er the rippling limpid water, mist is gathering.

Bright flashes the lightning, loudly rumbles the thunder;

Hillocks in a range are crushed and torn asunder.

Stone gates of the cavern immortals occupy

Are with a bang split into two parts there to lie,

Showing a blue sky vast and boundless, whence shine

The sun and moon on gold and silver terraces fine.

With the rainbows as clothes and the winds as horses,

The Lords of Clouds come swarming down in great forces.

Tigers play the zithers, phoenixes pull the cars;

Numerous are immortals that line up to pass.

Suddenly I start, my heart aches and my soul moans;

Awaken, I stand up and utter long, long groans,

Unchanged are the mat and pillow I’m lying on,

While the wished-for visions I’ve just seen are all gone.

The merry-makings in the world are just these like;

Things and east-flowing water are fore’er alike.

I bid you good-bye, not sure when I’ll be back here.

Among the green rocks, I am to tend a white deer.

I’ll ride it to roam ’bout famous mounts, far or near.

How can I lower brows and stoop before men in power

And have to keep my face and heart all the time sour!
