March Of The Penguins

1. Each winter, alone in the ice deserts of Antarctica, emperor penguins in their thousands abandon the deep blue security of their ocean home and climb onto the frozen ice to begin their long journey into a region so cold, so extreme; it supports no other wildlife at this time of year. In single file, the penguins march blinded by severe snow storms, hit by gale-force winds.

2. Guided by instinct, they head for their traditional breeding ground where they will pair off into monogamous couples and mate. The days grow shorter, the weather ever more bitter. The females remain long enough only to lay a single egg. Once this is accomplished, exhausted by weeks without nourishment, they begin their return journey across the ice-field to the fish-filled seas. The journey is hazardous, and seals a predatory threat. The male emperors are left behind to guard and hatch the precious eggs, which they cradle at all times on top of their feet.

3. After two long months during which the males eat nothing, the eggs begin to hatch. Once they have emerged into their ghostly white new world, the chicks can not survive for long on their fathers’ limited food reserves. If their mothers are late returning from the ocean with food, the newly-hatched young will die.

4. Once the families are reunited, the roles reverse, the mothers remaining with their new young while their mates head, exhausted and starved, for the sea, and food. While the adults fish, the chicks face the ever-present threat of attack by giant petrels .As the weather grows warmer and the ice floes finally begin to crack and melt, the adults will repeat their journey countless times, marching many hundreds of miles over some of the most dangerous territory on Earth, until the chicks are ready to take their first faltering dive into the deep blue waters of the Antarctic. “March of the Penguins” tells one of the most beautiful love stories on Earth.

Clouds

1. I’ve opened the curtain of my east window here above the computer, and I sit now in a holy theater before a sky-blue stage. A little cloud above the neighbor’s trees resembles Jimmy Durant’s nose for a while, then becomes amorphous as it slips on north. Other clouds follow, big and little and tiny on their march toward whereness. Wisps of them lead or droop because there must always be leading and drooping.

2. The trees seem to laugh at the clouds while yet reaching for them with swaying branches. Trees must think that they are real, rooted, somebody, and that perhaps the clouds are only tickled water which sometimes blocks their sun. But trees are clouds, too, of green leaves clouds that only move a little. Trees grow and change and dissipate like their airborne cousins.

3. And what am I but a cloud of thoughts and feelings and aspirations? Don’t I put out tentative mists here and there? Don’t I occasionally appear to other people as a ridiculous shape of thoughts without my intending to? Don’t I drift toward the north when I feel the breezes of love and the warmth of compassion?

4. If clouds are beings, and beings are clouds, are we not all well advised to drift, to feel the wind tucking us in here and plucking us out there? Are we such rock-hard bodily lumps as we imagine?

5. Drift, let me. Sing to the sky, will I. One in many, are we. Let us breathe the breeze and find therein our roots in the spirit.

6. I close the curtain now, feeling broader, fresher. The act is over. Applause is sweeping through the trees.
